10 Reasons Why I’ll Never Buy Store-Bought Bread Again

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can be expensive. In addition to organic groceries for two, there’s also daily vitamins, protein and collagen powders, health bars and “healthy” snacks, specialty subscriptions, fitness memberships and dietary supplements.

And while there are some products I swear by and others I’m not so sure about (re: supplements), one thing is for certain: better health should be simpler. It should be less stressful. And it shouldn’t clutter the kitchen cabinets.

So in my search for a super-powered health pill that doesn’t exist, I found something even more glorious: the Superfood Bread Cube made by Uprising Foods. It’s a nutrient-dense, keto-friendly brick of bread that claims to act like a health bar and taste like a cheat meal.

This Bread Is Different – I Swear

Let me start by saying we’re not big bread-eaters: I’ve been low-carb and grain-free for years, and my partner follows a keto diet. So while I rarely crave bread, sometimes I just miss it. The versatility. The texture. The heartiness. In those moments of nostalgia, we’ll buy a diet-friendly kind. But let’s be honest: most low-carb and keto breads are expensive and tasteless.

So when I received my first Superfood Bread Cube, my instinct was to approach it like any other keto bread: with intense skepticism and a tiny, sliver of optimism. If it was going to get my seal of approval, it needed to excel in two key categories: flavor and overall value. And to my surprise, it did.

1. It Actually Tastes Good

When I read that the keto cube “tastes like heaven,” I thought they were joking. But it’s true. Each bite offers a mild nutty taste that’s reminiscent of sourdough. (And not only does it taste like real bread, it eats like it, too.)

2. You Get More Bread For Your Buck

Sometimes I stop and think about the simple, easily attainable ingredients that go into a loaf of bread and I’m perplexed by the high prices. But as it turns out, the actual ingredients have nothing to do with the cost: it’s all about calories.

On average, the best-selling bread brands charge $2.00 for every 100 calories, which is why you can expect to spend nearly $10 per loaf. But the Superfood Bread Cube only costs $0.78 per 100 calories. And these are energy-packed, nutrient-dense, keep-you-full calories derived from real foods – which makes all the difference.

While it passed my initial test, Uprising Food’s keto bread proved to be so much more than I initially expected. (Especially after I started eating it regularly.) Here are just a few other reasons why I think it’s worth its weight in grain-free gold.

3. Helps Improve Digestive Woes

As someone who’s struggled with bloating and digestive discomfort, I understand the importance of good gut health. I’ve tried stool tests to better understand my microbiome, pre- and probiotics, digestive enzymes and supplementary powders, but at the end of the day, scientists think the key to optimal gut health is actually so much simpler. We just need more fiber.

When you eat fiber-packed foods, you feed good gut bacteria which helps to clean out your system, leading to improved digestion, increased energy, better skin, lower cholesterol and so much more. But 95% of Americans aren’t getting enough of it. Not even close.

The daily recommended serving is between 25 and 38 grams, which you could get by eating 6-9 apples or 2 full heads of raw broccoli. But Uprising Foods is making it easier (and tastier) to hit your daily fiber goal by packing 9 grams into one single slice.

4. Say Goodbye to Gluten and Wheat

You don’t have to live the keto lifestyle to enjoy the keto bread cube. If you’re looking to lose a few pounds, it’s a delicious and filling alternative to wheat bread, which contains refined flours that cause blood sugar to spike. Or, if you avoid grains and gluten for medical reasons like I do, you can finally enjoy an all-natural option that actually tastes like real bread.

5. It’s Free From (Nasty) Preservatives

If you’re a hardcore ingredient-reader like I am, then you’ve probably seen the extensive ingredient list on the back of a loaf of bread. And it’s terrifying.

In addition to inflammatory grains and gluten, artificial sweeteners and hard-to-pronounce preservatives, your average store-bought loaf also contains bleach, fillers and air. Yes, air. The least nutrient-dense “ingredient” of all time.

The Superfood Bread Cube, however, is made with only 8 clean ingredients (apple cider vinegar, organic egg whites, baking powder, water and salt), 3 of which are fiber powerhouses that promote healthy digestion (almond flour, golden flaxseed and psyllium husk).

6. It’s Packed With Macronutrients

If you track macros, you know that the foods we eat should contain essential nutrients that actually fuel our bodies. That’s why it’s hard to justify eating store-bought bread.

Your average loaf of whole wheat contains a laundry-list of additives, but they don’t provide any additional nutritional value. And while each slice may only have 60-70 calories, it also offers 11 net carbs, 4 grams of protein and only 1 measly gram of fat. One superfood slice, on the other hand, contains 160 filling calories, 2 net carbs, 6 grams of protein and 11 grams of heart-healthy fats to keep you going.

7. You Don’t Have to Bake It Yourself

I felt a little FOMO during the bread-baking era of the pandemic, but then I remembered how labor-intensive the process can be. Especially when you have to adapt each recipe for different diets.

While I’ve had success making my own low-carb, grain-free bread in the past (yes, it was keto cloud bread), the texture and flavors were nowhere near the real thing. And I’ll come right out and admit it: I am not an artisan bread-maker. But luckily, the mastermind behind the Superfood Bread Cube is.

Your average health bread tastes a lot like…nothing. Or worse – cardboard. But now, you can sit back and savor delicious bread that’s crafted by an expert, award-winning artisan bread-maker – not a scientist or dietician.

8. Enjoy a Longer Shelf Life

If you’re not a big bread-eater, loaves can go bad suspiciously fast – especially ones that are homemade or brought back from the bakery. But if you can manage to slowly savor your keto cube, it will stay fresh on your countertop for up to one week, which is pretty impressive for food that doesn’t contain any preservatives. You can also keep it refrigerated for 1-4 weeks, or freeze it for up to six months. And best of all – you’ll never have to worry about compromising quality.

9. Skip the Grocery Store

There are days when I dread getting groceries more than anything. And now, it’s even more of a chore. Luckily, you can start the week feeling less stressed with freshly baked bread that’s delivered to your door every Monday.

10. Indulge Without the Guilt

Do you remember sandwiches? French toast? Grilled cheese? What about crackers and croutons? Or even homemade stuffing? Me too. And we shouldn’t have to save those mouthwatering treats for “cheat day.” Or worse – settle for disappointing imposters. With nutritious keto bread that looks, cooks and tastes like real bread, you can enjoy your favorite comfort foods again without having to compromise your diet or count carbs.
